Quantitative paleotemperature estimates from dO of chironomid head capsules preserved in arctic lake sediments

چکیده
A paleoenvironmental perspective of temperature change is paramount to understanding the significance of recent warming in the Arctic. Late Quaternary sediments from many arctic lakes provide environmental archives with decadal resolution, but reconstructions are hampered by the relative insensitivity of many traditional proxies to temperature. Here, we show that the O of head capsules of chironomid larvae are equilibrated with the O of lakewaters in which they live. In suitable lakes, lakewater O is controlled by the O of local precipitation, which is strongly correlated to mean annual air temperature (MAT). From this correlation, chironomid O can be used to examine past changes in MAT. We illustrate the potential of this novel approach to paleothermometry with examples from two arctic lakes that reveal strong regional paleoclimatic gradients in the early Holocene.

Chironomid-based palaeotemperature estimates for northeast Finland during Oxygen Isotope Stage 3
Quantitative palaeotemperature estimates for the earlier part of Oxygen Isotope Stage (OIS-) 3 are inferred from subfossil chironomid remains. The high-latitudinal study site of Sokli, northeast Finland, provides for a unique lacustrine deposit covering the earlier part of OIS-3, and the chironomid remains found in the sediments show that a shallow lake with a diverse fauna was present at the s...
متن کاملIntraregional variability in chironomid-inferred temperature estimates and the influence of river inundations on lacustrine chironomid assemblages
Floodplain lakes are rarely analysed for fossil chironomids and usually not incorporated in modern chironomid-climate calibration datasets because of the potential complex hydrological processes that could result from flooding of the lakes. In order to investigate this potential influence of river inundations on fossil chironomid assemblages, 13 regularly inundated lakes and 20 lakes isolated f...
متن کاملDistribution of Midge Remains (Diptera: Chironomidae) in Surficial Lake Sediments in New England
A survey of larval midge remains from surficial sediments in 37 New England lakes was undertaken in order to relate midge distributions to environmental factors. The lakes are located along a transect from northern New Hampshire to southern Connecticut. The midges proved to be a very diverse group of insects in these freshwater habitats. A total of 65 chironomid taxa were recovered. Canonical c...
متن کاملPaleotemperature reconstruction in tropical Africa using fossil Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera)
Fossil assemblages of chironomid larvae (non-biting midges) preserved in lake sediments are well-established paleothermometers in north-temperate and boreal regions, but their potential for temperature reconstruction in tropical regions has never before been assessed. In this study, we surveyed subfossil chironomid assemblages in the surface sediments of 65 lakes and permanent pools in southwes...
متن کاملRapid 20th century environmental change on northeastern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada inferred from a multi-proxy lacustrine record
The Arctic has a disproportionately large response to changes in radiative forcing of climate, and arctic lacustrine ecosystems respond sensitively to these changes. The goal of this research is to generate high-resolution climate records for the past two millennia using multiple proxies in order to place 20th and 21st century climate and environmental change into a long-term context. We use a ...
